Child Development Program

Admissions Procedures

Prior to seeking admission to this program, the student should meet with an advisor and develop a comprehensive plan for satisfying program requirements. A student gains admission to the associate in Applied Science program by meeting Alabama child care employment standards (See below); completing the certificate program; and maintaining a high grade point average.

Alabama Act 200-775 requires criminal history check on all current and prospective early care and education teachers, directors, and any additional staff working with young children such as program volunteers. As a result, students entering this program are expected to undergo the required checks including but not limited to background and health checks as required by law. Additionally, the JSCC Child Development Program provides the educational component of the nationally recognized Child Development Associate (CDA) awarded by the Council for Professional Recognition in Washington, D.C. The educational component of the CDA consists of three JSCC Child Development courses:

•  CHD 100 - Introduction to Early Care and Education
•  CHD 204 - Materials and Methods for Teaching Young Children
•  CHD 206 - Children's Health and Safety

NOTE: These courses are also a part of the certificate and associate degree.
