Communications Division
Course Information & Competencies
The Communications Division offers courses in English,
Speech, Mass Communications, Theater, Reading, and Spanish. English
placement tests are given in JC/LWH 322 and JC/HSB 122. Contact Enrollment
Services for more information.
Speech Course Offerings
- SPH 106 and SPH 107 are offered during fall, spring, and summer. SPH
106 is also offered during the May Mini Term. Most programs accept
either of these courses to meet the speech requirement.
SPH 123-125 Forensics Workshops are offered by permission from the
Speech Team Director, Janice Stuckey.
- SPH 116: Interpersonal Communication and SPH 227: Argumentation and
Debate will be offered Spring 2004. Contact Janice Stuckey for more
information.
English Course Offerings
- ENG 080, ENG 093, ENG 101, ENG 102, ENG 251, ENG 252, ENG 261, and
ENG 262 are all offered during fall, spring, and summer terms.
- Creative writing courses are offered during fall and spring. ENG
271: World Literature I is offered in fall and ENG 272: World Literature
II is offered in spring.
ESL Course Descriptions
- ESL 094: Beginning ESL-3 Semester Hours (Institutional Credit)
Beginning ESL provides instruction and practice in English reading,
writing, speaking, and listening for non-native speakers of English.
Emphasis is placed on grammar, listening skills, note-taking skills,
reading comprehension, pronunciation, and sentence structure. Students
will demonstrate these skills in short writing assignments,
comprehension checks, pronunciation drills, and brief oral
presentations.
- ESL 096: Intermediate ESL-3 Semester Hours (Institutional Credit)
Intermediate ESL provides instruction and practice in English reading,
writing, listening, and speaking for non-native speakers of English.
Emphasis is placed on English grammar, sentence structure, paragraph
development, study skills, reading articles and other short works, group
and peer work, and presentation skills. Students will demonstrate these
skills chiefly through the writing of paragraphs and giving oral
presentations.
- ESL 098: Advanced ESL-3 Semester Hours (Institutional Credit)
Advanced ESL is an introduction to college reading and writing for
students who are non-native speakers English. This course provides
instruction and practice in sentence structure, paragraph development,
essay development, and oral presentation skills. Students will
demonstrate these skills chiefly through the writing of paragraphs and
short essays, and giving oral presentations.
