Architectural/Civil Design Technology

Associate Degree & Certificate Information
  • Traditional drafters tools - drawing boards and pencils, pens and protractors have been replaced by CADD systems - computer system applications that can create and store drawings electronically. Although technicians use CADD extensively, it is only a tool and a well developed knowledge of drafting standards, science and engineering technology must be obtained by each program graduate.
  • Architectural/Civil program will teach you to participate in the conceptual development of a project and oversee its organization, scheduling and implementation. After the completion you will be able to prepare project documentation and plans used by workers to build structures and provide visual guidelines while showing the technical details, specify dimensions, materials and procedures.
  • As you consider entering this career and you begin to think about job availability there are several items to think about. A drafter today may be identified as an CAD Operator, Engineering Technician, Architectural Assistant and a dozen other names. Your skills and professional training lies in the theory and technical aspects of drafting and design regardless of the Job Title. These technical skills will play an important part of career field you enter.
  • Industrial growth and increasingly complex design processes will increase the demand for drafters and technicians. Further, technicians are performing tasks traditionally reserved for engineers and architects.
