Criminal Justice & Law Enforcement
Online Degrees
Students may now earn their Associate in Science Criminal Justice Degree
and/or their Associate in Applied Science Law Enforcement Degree
primarily online. Criminal Justice online courses are
similar to traditional classroom courses and should be approached with
the same diligence. Students in online classes should be
self-disciplined and structured in their study habits.
Additional Distance Learning options include Telecourses,
Videoconferencing and Web-Assisted courses. College-Level Examination
Program (CLEP) is another option for fast track students (see Admissions
section of JSCC Catalog or call Testing at
(205) 856-7896). These are
nationally standardized exams which provide students an opportunity to
'test out of” certain courses listed in this catalog section.
Look for various 'Selected Topics in Criminal Justice” listed under CRJ
290. These are seminar courses that require minimal classroom time and
transfer to most universities including UAB. Jefferson State, being an
accredited college, provides assurance of transferability of courses
(see JSCC Catalog, University Parallel, Alabama General Studies
Committee Approved Course Listing). Transfer 'Core Area” courses are
also denoted in the Course Descriptions section of JSCC Catalog.
SWORN OFFICERS may receive up to 12 free semester hours in criminal
justice once they have completed an equivalent number of criminal
justice hours (minimum of 6) with JSCC. Official certification must be
either an academic transcript from an accredited college or a letter on
official letterhead from the academy and must be sent to Enrollment
Services, 2601 Carson Road, B'ham, AL 35215. Six free hours are also
available for Military credit (see same catalog section: Admissions,
Credit for Non-Traditional Academic Work).
Jefferson State has five convenient locations: Jefferson (Carson Rd),
Shelby (Valleydale), Pell City, St. Clair (Moody) and Warrior. Classes
are available days, nights, weekends, and online to accommodate busy
schedules. For further information, contact Cecilia Tubbs, Criminal
