Fire Science Program
The purpose of this program is to provide firefighters with a program of
instruction leading to a degree. The program is designed with the
objective of increasing firefighter professionalism through continuing
education. Check with your four year institution for the transferability
of courses in this program. This program is not specifically designed to
transfer to a four year institution. Students planning to transfer to a
four year program should notify their advisor upon entry into the
program. Prospective students should meet with an advisor to discuss
admission to the program and to develop a plan for satisfying the
program’s requirements.
The Fire Science program provides both a Certificate Program and an
Associate in Applied Science Degree Program. All course work completed
for the certificate program will transfer to the degree program. The
certificate program is designed as an intermediate recognition step or
as a second credential.
Certain classes in the program parallel certification courses
firefighters routinely attend either on campus at the Alabama Fire
College or at stations and field training centers across Alabama. Upon
completion of six hours of approved FSC courses at Jefferson State,
students can be awarded credit for classes taken in the field training
centers and stations up to a total of 20 semester hours. Credit for the
student’s Firefighter I certification will be applied to FSC 101,
Introduction to the Fire Service and FSC 220, Fire Extinguishing Agents.
Other crossover classes are listed in parenthesis on the FSC Electives
page. Classes taken on campus at the Alabama Fire College can be
transferred similar to other educational transcripts provided the
paperwork for obtaining college credit was completed at the time the
class was taken. Check with your advisor for details.
The Fire Science Program is a blended program utilizing both online and
traditional classes to accommodate the unique schedule of the fire
service.
