Radio & TV Production & Broadcasting

Jefferson State's Radio and Television Production
and Broadcasting Program is being discontinued
effective immediately. Only those students who have
already begun the sequence of RTV courses at
Jefferson State prior to spring semester 2011 may
register for RTV courses. No new students will be
admitted to the Radio and Television Program or be
allowed to take RTV courses.
Current RTV students should contact the program

in developing a plan to complete graduation
requirements.

The Mass Communications Department offers programs for students who
intend to that cover the basic fundamentals involved in the daily
operations of major electronic media, production facilities or media
specialists in either the field of radio/audio or television/video. The
curriculum is essentially non-technical in nature centering on the
operation of equipment and facilities rather than repair or maintenance.
Specialized areas of study such as programming, production, announcing,
script, commercial and news writing are taught. Subjects specific to
individual fields such as radio format design or video directing are
covered as well. In addition, all students participate in four semesters
of laboratory class work in their field.
- WJSR-FM 91.1 -
Radio/audio students work as staff announcers and student managers at
WJSR-FM radio. The Edge This student operated, non-commercial,
college radio station serves the more than 6000 college and high school
students at and surrounding the Jefferson State Jefferson Campus. It is
staffed by students majoring in radio/audio. For over 25 years WJSR has
been the training ground for professionals in broadcasting, audio
production, and a variety of business media fields. Our graduates have
found success throughout Alabama and the southeast. WJSR also provides
opportunities for scholarships for our finest students. Student managers
operate the programming, production, public service, and promotion
departments. In addition to valuable experience they are provided with
full tuition and fees for their education at Jefferson State.
WJSR is a non-commercial, educational radio station broadcasting at 91.1
on the FM dial. The station's mission is to serve as a learning
laboratory for students and to provide educational, informational and
cultural resources to persons within its coverage area. It is staffed by
student announcers, most of whom are Mass Communication majors, and
managed by students who are scholarship recipients. Interested students

- Television/video students participate in producing student projects in
the Jefferson State television studio. Students majoring in
television/video have the opportunity to get hands-on practical
experience in all aspects of video production. Live studio productions
and remote shoots provide training in program planning, script writing
and narration, talent, camera operation, lighting, audio, teleprompter
reading and operation, digital special effects production and editing,
character generation, video switching, floor managing and directing. As
the 39th largest television market in America, Birmingham offers
graduates a wide variety of employment opportunities. Our students have
also taken their skills to the major markets throughout the country.
Scholarships are available for students who accept team leadership roles
in the television/video productions.
Jefferson State Television functions as a laboratory for student video
production facility as well as the video production facility for the
College. The studio Digital Editing and effects to DVD & S-VHS tape
formats, chip cameras in both portable and studio configuration,
teleprompters, a Video Toaster with digital special effects, character
generation and animation, grid and portable lighting, wireless
microphones, and A|B roll computer controlled editing. Students
interested in television production should register for RTV 153
Practicum to Television.
- THE PIONEER is a student newspaper published by
students interested in journalism. It is also staffed and managed by
Mass Communication majors and the department awards scholarships to its
editors. To become part of the newspaper staff, new students should
register for MCM 113 Student Publications.
