Question:
What is the maximum number of students per course?

Answer:

  • English & Speech = 25
  • Science courses are limited by lab space
  • All other courses are typically limited to 45

Question:
What are the procedures if a student is caught cheating or accused of plagiarism?

Answer:
The instructor completes an Academic Dishonesty Report (form) and takes action as required in the College Catalog and Student Handbook. The instructor will most likely want to schedule a conference with the student to discuss the situation.

Question:
How do students register for Dual Enrollment courses?

Answer:
If the course will be taught on the high school campus, the counselor and the Dual Enrollment office will set a registration date at the high school. Students taking courses on any of Jefferson State’s campuses should refer to the current class schedule
for high school registration dates located online at http://www.jeffstateonline.com/(High school students cannot apply online and must submit a new application each semester.)

Question:
How do students pay for Dual Enrollment courses?

Answer:
Students taking classes on the high school campus will bring a check on the scheduled registration date and pay the representative from Jefferson State registering that student. Students taking classes on Jefferson State’s campus will be required to pay at the time of registration in the Cashier’s Office.

Question:
How do students withdraw from Dual Enrollment courses?

Answer:
Students must consult with their counselor before making any schedule changes and must also complete all necessary paperwork through Jefferson State.

Students will be allowed to drop with the permission of the high school within the first three days that the Dual Enrollment class meets. Please refer to the current class schedule for refund information (located online at http://www.jeffstateonline.com/online_services/refund.htm). Students will be made aware of the last day to withdraw in the orientation at the school. Any schedule changes must be approved by the high school counselor.

Question:
What are the Admission Requirements?

Answer:
Students must be in 10th, 11th or 12th grade, have a 3.00 cumulative GPA, and have permission via signatures of the counselor, principal, and superintendent.

Applications are available in the counselor’s office, any JSCC campus or online at www.jeffstateonline.com/futurestudents/highschoolprograms/dualenrollment.
(High school students cannot apply online and must submit a new application each semester.)

Question:
How many courses can a student take?

Answer:
Students may take up to two classes per semester.

Question:
What is the purpose of Dual Enrollment?

Answer:
Dual Enrollment allows qualified students to take college courses and receive both high school and college credit concurrently.

Question:
What forms should be completed?

Answer:
A Dual Enrollment Application is available to download (online at http://www.jeffstateonline.com/admissions/dual_enrollment/application_process.htm)

Students must also provide any proof of prerequisite for a particular course (ACT, SAT or placement test scores.)  (High school students cannot apply online and must submit a new application each semester.)

Question:
How successful is the Dual Enrollment program?

Answer:
Jefferson State’s Dual Enrollment program is the second largest in the state and has tripled in number of the last three years. More than 3,000 students have benefited by having college credit before graduating from high school.

Question:
What subjects are offered?

Answer:
All courses offered at Jefferson State other than remedial and Physical Education (P.E.) courses may be taken for dual credit.  Please contact Amy Sipper, Coordinator of Dual Enrollment, at (205) 856-7923 or email asipper@jeffstateonline.com.

Question:
Can parents talk with instructors about their children?

Answer:
Jefferson State complies with all FERPA (Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act  of 1974) regulations, which provide that, for high school students, the parents share  the  right to access education records.  Once in college, however, the right to access  education records rests solely with the student.  Because Dual Enrollment students fall in both categories, instructors should obtain the consent of the student  before disclosing the student's education information to the parent.  The high school administration  may, however, share information with the parent without the student's consent.

Question:
Will Dual Enrollment classes replace the required credit for Carnegie units toward graduation?

Answer:
It is the intent of Dual Enrollment for the student to receive core credit for the courses taken. However, school systems may choose to handle this differently. Some may give core while others give elective credit.

Question:
How do Jefferson State’s courses align with high school honors, advanced placement and international baccalaureate classes?

Answer:
Many Dual Enrollment courses are identical with the Advanced Placement (AP) curriculum.  Review of JSCC courses competencies and the STARS guide should answer specific questions regarding articulation.

Question:
How many students must be enrolled in order for the class to make?

Answer:
Jefferson State requires a minimum of 10 students for each course.

Question:
Do you pay the teacher if he or she is primarily employed though the high school?

Answer:
No. Jefferson State will pay the school, and its administration decides where those funds are allocated.

Question:
Is it possible to use our book if it is written at the college or Advanced Placement (AP) level?

Answer:
Use of any text for that subject at Jefferson State, other than those adopted by the college, must be approved by the department chair.

Question:
Are scholarships or financial aid available?

Answer:
Financial aid is not available to students who are still in high school. No Dual Enrollment scholarships are available; however, Jefferson State does offer Summer Studies Scholarships for which Dual Enrollment students may receive first preference.

Question:
How will Dual Enrollment affect our Advanced Placement (AP) program?

Answer:
Dual Enrollment and Advanced Placement (AP) can and do peacefully coexist. Many schools offer both and have satisfactory enrollment in both programs.

Question:
What is the difference between Dual Enrollment classes and Advanced Placement (AP) classes?

Answer:
Dual Enrollment Courses are guaranteed to transfer to any public college in the state of Alabama. Those students planning to transfer to out-of-state or private colleges are encouraged to consult that Admissions Office. Advanced Placement (AP)  transferability depends on the policy of each particular institution and what score that school will accept in a particular course. Also, in Dual Enrollment the student is tested by the person teaching the class rather than having to take a standardized test.
