Funeral Service Education

Distance Learning Option

The student must complete all professional and academic prerequisites and be admitted to the FSE Program. Academic prerequisites may be completed at any regionally accredited college with prior approval from a Funeral Service Education faculty advisor.

The following courses will have distance learning sections:

• Students must attend a one-day mandatory orientation at the beginning of first and fourth semester. They must also attend the mid-term and final exams. Instructors will be available the day prior to midterm and final exam testing sessions for individual student conferences, if the student wants to schedule a conference. These discussion-review sessions will be by appointment only. Any absence from any of the orientation or testing sessions will be subjected to the College Attendance Policy.
• Students should not be enrolled in these courses unless they are self-motivated, hard-working, and have sufficient computer skills (formatting, editing, uploading, downloading, navigating, etc.) and convenient daily access to a personal computer with a reliable internet connection.
• Make-Up Exams: Any student missing an exam will be allowed to take a comprehensive make-up exam (formatted at the discretion of the instructor) only on the date and time scheduled (by the instructor). The make-up exam will be offered only after the midterm or final exam has been completed. All make-up exams must be scheduled and completed within two weeks from the date of the original midterm or final exams, however, to qualify for a make-up exam students must notify the instructor prior to administration of the original exam or by 5:00 p.m. on the day the exam is administrated. No make-up on weekly quizzes; however, a copy of the missed quiz can be obtained from the instructor. Please note the work schedule do not constitute an excuse for a make-up exams.

Last Semester

FSE 228 is a work-study course and requires no class attendance. FSE 203 will require a minimum of 90 hours in embalming lab in Birmingham. These hours for 203 may be scheduled on a flexible basis. Review sessions for licensing examinations (FSE 230) will be conducted at Jefferson State.

Distance learning students will be required to sign an advising contract stipulating the schedule of courses for each semester and stipulating that the student will take no longer than four semesters to complete the Program. Students may enter the program fall or spring semester.
