GENERAL INFORMATION

Students enrolled at Jefferson State are encouraged to make full use of the Learning Resources Center resources and services.  The Learning Resources Center staff strives to create an atmosphere conducive to study and research. A professional librarian is available to provide assistance during all hours the LRC is open.

Classification System

The Library of Congress Classification System (LC) is used to classify materials in the Jefferson State Learning Resources Center.

Reference Books

The reference collection is marked with “REF” above the call number. These materials cannot be checkout out for use outside the Learning Resources Center.  Some examples of reference books are atlases, gazetteers, dictionaries, encyclopedias, indexes, bibliographies, and handbooks.

Periodicals

Both bound and current periodical collections are shelved alphabetically by title. Some back files of periodicals are available in micro format. Periodicals cannot be checked out of the LRC. Coin-operated copying machines are available if copies are needed. Change can be obtained at the Cashier or Pioneer Bookstore during their operating hours.

Archives

This area houses books, manuscripts, photographs and other materials on the history of Jefferson State Community College. Materials in this room do not circulate and must be used in the LRC.

Audiovisual Materials

Videocassettes, audiocassettes, and CDs are available for use in the LRC. Media equipment for viewing/listening is located in an area near the circulation desk. Students may not check out audiovisual materials for home use.

Copying Machines

Coin-operated machines for copying periodicals, reference books, and other printed materials are available in the LRC.  A machine that reads and prints copies of micro formats is also available. No change is available in the LRC but change can be obtained from the cashier and bookstore during their operational hours. All refunds for copying machine problems should be requested from the Pioneer Bookstore.

SERVICES FOR FACULTY & STAFF

Circulation Privileges for Faculty & Staff

1. Jefferson State faculty and staff members are extended the same borrowing privileges as students. The length of the loan period for faculty and staff is from 14 to 20 days.

2. Faculty may request student assistants/division secretaries to charge materials (books/audiovisuals) in their names if they send a written authorization listing the specific materials, faculty ID number, and faculty signature.

3. All materials checked out to a Jefferson State employee must be returned or paid for upon the termination of employment.

4. Faculty, staff and administrators are not charged fines for overdue books.  However, they are encouraged to return materials within the loan period because other users may need to use the materials. Employees must pay for any materials that are lost or damaged.

5. Faculty members may borrow materials from UAB, Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, and Lawson State Community College with valid Jefferson State identification. Borrowers must observe all policies of the lending library and are responsible for returning materials to that library.

6. Letters are sent through the campus mail to faculty and staff members before the end of each semester to remind them of materials checked out to them.

Reserve Services

Books, audiovisuals, and copies of materials may be placed on reserve at the circulation desk for library use only or limited circulation to students. Faculty members should bring the materials to be placed on reserve to the library before making announcements of availability to students.

Bibliographic Instruction & Library Orientation

Requests for bibliographic instruction and library orientation may be made by contacting the Information Services Librarian at (205) 856-8524. Jefferson Campus or by contacting the Coordinator of Learning Resources Center at (205) 983-5930, Shelby-Hoover Campus. Bibliographic instruction for class groups is done in conjunction with class assignments and at the request of the faculty member making the assignment. Therefore, resources included or presented to the class vary not only to reflect the different curriculum content of the student’s course, but the specific assignment.

How to Recommend New Materials for the Collections

Recommendations for purchase may be sent by email to the LRC. A link on Jeffnet includes procedures for recommending materials and an electronic form for entering specific information about the materials. Priorities for purchasing of materials are also listed on Jeffnet.

Textbooks

Textbooks are not usually purchased for the collections. Occasionally, such works are considered the best source of information available on a subject or deemed standard works in a field.  Judged by these standards, purchase is acceptable. Students are encouraged to purchase their textbooks from the Pioneer Bookstore. They should not expect the Learning Resources Center to have copies of current texts.

Gifts

Donations of materials are accepted as long as the gifts are useful to the Learning Resources Center in meeting its informational services. Gifts are considered permanent property of the library and are never accepted conditionally. The professional librarians reverse the right to evaluate all materials based upon the collection needs and keep or dispose of any gift materials.

CIRCULATION OF MATERIALS

Check-out

To check out materials, students must present a current Jefferson State student I.D. card or driver’s license. Not more than seven books on a single subject may be checked out at any one time.

Loan Period

The loan period for circulating materials is from 14 to 20 days. The date the book is due will be stamped on the date-due slip in the pocket of the book.

Renewals

All regular circulating materials may be renewed one time. Books not overdue may be renewed by telephone.  All fines on overdue books must be paid before renewal.

Reserves

Instructors may choose to place materials their classes will be using for assignments on reserve.  Students who want to use reserve materials should ask for them at the circulation desk.  There are three types of reserve: Library Use Only, Two-Day Reserve, and One-Week Reserve.

Overdue Materials

Students who have library fines or overdue books must clear these debts before they can register or request a transcript. Students with overdue books charged to their student numbers cannot check out additional materials until those books are returned or paid for if they are lost.

Overdue Notices

Overdue notices are mailed to students three times during the semester.

Fines and Lost Book Charges

A fine of ten cents a day is charged on each book. Special fines are charged for overdue reserve books. Charges for lost books are based on the cost of replacement at the time of payment.

Circulation Privileges to Students and Faculty from Other Institutions

Under the terms of the inter-institutional Cooperative Borrowing Agreement, library privileges are extended to Jefferson State students at other colleges. Institutions signing the agreement are: University of Alabama at Birmingham, Lawson State Community College, Birmingham-Southern College, Miles College, and Jefferson State. Jefferson State students must present a valid Jefferson State student ID at the participating library to borrow materials.  Students not returning materials on time are assessed fines on the same basis as other patrons of the lending library. A hold will be placed on student records at Jefferson State for fines and overdue materials at participating libraries.
