The Practical Nursing program is a three semester program that prepares individuals to care for patients in varied health care settings under the direction of a registered nurse or duly qualified medical practitioner. Currently, the program is offered annually in the Fall semester at the Jefferson campus. The deadline for application submission is as published for the ADN program.  Admission is highly competitive and is based on the following minimum criteria:

  Unconditional admission to the college.

Receipt of completed application for the Practical Nursing Program by due date.

A minimum of 2.50 cumulative GPA for students with previous college work.

A minimum of 2.50 high school GPA for

students without prior college work (GED

acceptable in lieu of high school transcript).

Eligibility for English 101 and Math 116 as determined by college policy.

  Good standing with the college.

Meeting the essential functions or technical standards required for nursing.

A score of 76 or higher on the COMPASS

Reading Examination (or related ACT Reading

Score of 17 or higher).

Prior to the beginning of clinical experiences, students must submit a medical examination form. Immunizations and/or titers for several communicable diseases are required as part of this exam. Required immunizations may be obtained from any health care provider but since health insurance often does not cover immunizations for adults, students may want to check with local health department clinics. The Shelby County Health Department (205-664-2470) will provide JSCC nursing students immunizations regardless of the student's county of residence. The fee schedule (as of May 2008) is:

Test Cost
Measles/mumps/rubella $5.00
Hepatitis B

$30.63 per injection if the student is 19years or older;

$5.00 per injection if younger than 19 years

Chickenpox $5.00 if there is a negative titer
TB skin test No charge

All policies found in the Jefferson State Community College Catalog and Handbook apply to nursing students. However, additional policies and procedures specific to the Department of Nursing may be found in the Nursing Student Handbook.
