Educational Talent Search

We can help you achieve your goal of a college education.

What is Talent Search?

Educational Talent Search (ETS) program is an educational outreach program funded by the U.S. Department of Education. It is designed to motivate and support students in grades 6-12 who have the potential to succeed in college.

What do we do?

The ETS program staff identifies qualified individuals with the potential for education at the college level. Program participants are provided services based on their needs. Services include assistance for completing the middle and high school, as well as choosing an academic major and enrolling in college. Assistance is offered through career and academic counseling services, tutoring, test preparation, career assessment, seminars, and workshops. ETS will also assist participants in obtaining information and applying to the college of their choice and completing the applications for federal and institutional financial aid.

I'm in middle school, how will Talent Search help me?

You may think you are too young to begin preparing for college, think again. At the beginning of each school year you start with a review of material that you covered the previous year. From that point you encounter new information that builds upon prior learning. As you gain new knowledge you better prepare yourself for the next level. Talent Search will provide assistance through tutoring, guidance and encouragement that will help you move from one level to the next.

I am in high school, how will Talent Search help me?

You have made it to high school and now the next step is college. How will you ever get there? That is where Talent Search steps in, but first you must maintain good grades in high school and pass the exit exam. Talent Search offers career counseling, exit exam preparation, preparation for college entrance tests, financial aid information for college, as well as providing students with the opportunity to tour college and university campuses.

How can I receive a Talent Search application?

Download an application or you can also be picked up in the ETS Office on the Jefferson Campus in Lurleen Wallace Hall, Room 247.

What else can I do to prepare myself, or if I am a parent, to prepare my child for college?

Be knowledgeable! Find out the number of credit hours required by your high school to meet graduation requirements. Study! Take advantage of after-school tutoring. State High School Exit Examination preparation, and ACT preparation. Remember! Most public four-year-colleges and universities require that public school students pass the State Exit Exam, have an overall 2.5 grade point average, and score at least an 18 on the ACT or 870 on the SAT entrance examination to meet admission requirements. Establish Good Study Habits! Set aside an hour of study time each night. Study for 20-25 minutes, then take a five minute break and resume studying for an additional 20-25 minutes. Have a parent, sibling, or a friend test your knowledge. To apply for grants, scholarships or student loans you must complete a Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA).

*If you are having trouble completing the FAFSA online please contact the ETS office and our staff will be happy to assist you.
