GED Examination Information

Jefferson State Community College administers the GED examination each Wednesday at the Jefferson Campus. Applicants are required to register prior to their desired examination date. Applicants may register any Monday, Tuesday or Thursday between the hours of 9:00 a.m. and 3:00 p.m. Students wishing to test at the Jefferson Campus may register in the ACT Center (Lurleen Wallace Hall, Room 322).

Students may also register for the GED at the Shelby-Hoover Campus receptionist desk of General Studies Building, Shelby Campus. Applicants must present current, government issued photo identification (see identification requirements below) and social security card during registration and again on the day of the examination.

Additionally, to be eligible for the GED examination, applicants for GED testing must meet all of the following conditions:

  • Be a resident of the state of Alabama.
  • Be officially withdrawn from high school.
  • Be eighteen years of age

(Exceptions: Sixteen or seventeen-year-olds may test with a notarized permission letter from their parent/legal guardian and proof of official withdrawal from high school.

GED Identification Requirements

GED applicants must present the following forms of identification at the time of registration and again on the day of the examination:

Social Security card and one of the following:

  • Current driver’s license
  • Current passport
  • Current United States military identification
  • Current state issued, non-driver identification
  • School or other government identification cards which show the examinee’s name, address, date of birth, and recognizable photo

Applicants not meeting identification requirements will not be admitted to the examination session.

The entire GED examination will last approximately 8 hours, including a five-minute break between each section of the test and a thirty-minute lunch break. The GED examination consists of the following subtests:

  • Language Arts, Writing - 120 minutes
  • Language Arts, Reading - 65 minutes
  • Mathematics - 90 minutes
  • Science - 80 minutes
  • Social Studies - 70 minutes

Examination fees for the GED examination are payable in cash only and are due on the day of the registration. The fee for first time test examinees is $50.00. Retest fees are $10.00 per test.
