The Greater Birmingham Highway Safety Program is offering a federally
funded alcohol education program to schools in Jefferson, Walker, St.
Clair, Shelby, Chilton and Blount counties. Our goal is to reduce injuries
and fatalities related to motor vehicle crashes. Various education
strategies will be employed to improve student awareness and knowledge of
the role that alcohol /drugs play in car crashes and their devastating
effects on society, our bodies and brains.
Operation LifesaverThe GBHSP also offers a presentation on train safety for students and our
community. Approximately every two hours, a collision occurs between a
train and another vehicle or a train and a pedestrian. Most of the crashes
happen within 25 miles of home. We have a video especially for teens and a
very visual presentation depicting the dangers involved when trains and
people get too close
The time required for either presentation is just one class period or an
hour. These informational programs are offered free of charge through a
federally funded grant to increase awareness of safety issues and to
decrease injuries and deaths on our railways and highways.
