Wingspan
Wingspan is
an annual literary and visual arts publication of Jefferson State
Community College in Birmingham, Alabama. Its purpose is to act as a
creative outlet for students, faculty, alumni and residents of the
surrounding area, thus encouraging and fostering an appreciation for the
creative process.
Editorial Policy:
The works accepted for publication are reviewed by faculty advisors and
a student editorial staff on the basis of originality, graceful use of
language, clarity of thought and the presence of an individual style.
The nature of art is not to advance a religious or political agenda, but
to raise universal questions about human nature and to engage reaction.
Therefore, the experience of art, both literary and visual, is bound to
involve controversial subject matter at times. The college supports the
students’/artists’ right to a free search for truth and its exposition.
In pursuit of that goal, however, advisors reserve the right to edit
submissions as is necessary for suitable print. Appropriateness of
material is defined in part as that which will “promote community and
civic well-being, provide insight into different cultural perspectives
and expand the intellectual development of students.” The opinions
expressed in the artistic works are those of the artist and do not
reflect the opinions of the college administration, faculty, or staff.
Note that all rights revert to the artist upon publication.
